When was the first car racing accident?
By Product Expert | Posted in Chevrolet on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018 at 9:45 pmCar racing is fun, but it can also be a very dangerous sport. While drivers have extensive safety equipment in each vehicle to try to keep them safe in the event of an accident, still accidents happen on the race track. But when was the first car racing accident? We assume that the earliest accidents haven’t been recorded (probably the first time two people on a street had cars they would have tried to race…) but we do have access to the first ever filmed car racing accident that happened in 1919.

First Car Racing Deaths
The first death of a driver during a car race was in 1900 during the Coppa Florio in Italy. His name was Attilio Caffaratti and he was Italian. The first American recorded to die in a race was Ralph Ireland (1911) who had an accident in practice with a deflated tire. The first American who had an in-race accident was Bob Burman (1916). David Bruce-Brown also died practicing for a race (the Vanderbuilt Cup) in 1912.
