Here in Texas, we love Saint Patrick’s Day. We narrowed down the main events to hit up in Austin this year on the annual celebration of Saint Patrick converting those troublesome pagans. Just remember to wear green or you might get pinched.
St. Patrick’s Day Austin
Locale: Pioneer Farms
When?: Sunday, March 17th (St. P’s Day) from 12 pm to 6 pm.
Hosted by the Celtic Cultural Center of Texas, the Austin Celtic Association, and the Cultural Arts Division for the City of Austin, the St. Patrick’s Day Austin festival at Pioneer Farms is the dominant St. Patrick’s event in the city. It’s so dominant that it doesn’t really have a specified name other than “St. Patrick’s Day Austin.”
This family-friendly event strongly emphasizes that it’s all about “authentic Irish culture.” There will be no green beer in sight, just plenty of “the finest Irish imports in the color the Irish gods intended.” Instead of leprechauns, you’ll get to experience the real traditions of the Old Country.
Entertainment will consist of two covered stages boasting international and local stars of Celtic music. The show will go on no matter the weather.
Food will come in the form of a special St. Patty’s day menu. There will be the classic corned beef and cabbage, plus other options including fish n’ chips and Irish pastries. Beers on tap include Guinness, Harp, and Smithwicks.
Other events range from a free intro to Irish language workshop and horse n’ carriage rides, to a video game theater (in a climate-controlled gaming utopia) and a bumper soccer arena.
Advance online tickets are $12 for adults, and $5 for kids under thirteen. If you’re under two, it’s free. Print out your Paypal receipt/confirmation email after your purchase and use it as your ticket for entry.
Jack & Ginger’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration
Locale: Jack & Ginger’s – 11500B Rock Rose
When?: Sunday, March 17th. Doors open at 10 a.m. Live entertainment begins at 12 p.m.
If heavy authenticity isn’t your thing and you’d rather go for an American-style St. Pats, stop by Jack & Ginger’s Irish pub. There will be green beer, Irish and American Comfort foods, and their special take on traditional shepherds pie.
Starting at noon, live entertainment will take place on two outdoor stages. It will feature a variety of Irish-style music, including bagpipes.
The cover charge is $10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and $20 for the rest of the day.
Other Irish Pubs in Austin
Other standout Irish pubs in Austin include BD Riley’s, which offers a menu full of classic Irish eats, a seemingly endless flow of draft beer, and often live entertainment. Fado’s Irish Pub is another great place to check out.
