Here at Third Coast Auto, some people call us “tire-lovers.” And we’re fine with that. Tires are important. Without them, our whole vehicle would be rendered useless and immobile. But we don’t spend nearly as much time thinking about them as we should. To remedy that, here’s some helpful tips about tires- and they just might save your life.
What should I watch for on my tires?
Be sure to keep up with regular maintenance, follow directions on tire labels, keep track of their age, and be aware of any recalls. If you do these things, you’re already ahead of the game and on your way to greater safety.
How often should I check my tire pressure?
Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month. Wait to check your vehicle at least three hours after you last drove it.
When should a tire be replaced?
Once a tire is six to ten years old, it’s time to change to a new one. Even though the tread level may still be considered safe, at this age, the tire compound may not be. This is dangerous to drive on. It applies to spare tires too.
Keep an eye on your tread. This includes the classic “penny test, where you make sure Abe Lincoln’s head is fully buried on an upside-down insert. If the penny is upside down and the tire does not reach beyond Abe’s chin, it’s time to get your tires replaced.
Also look for cupping, fraying, decay, or uneven wear. These issues may be pointing to something wrong with another aspect of your vehicle, such as the driveline, suspension, or steering system. If your vehicle is driving crooked or unsteady, take it in to your mechanic or a wheel and alignment expert.

How often should I get my tires rotated?
If your owner’s manual recommends tire rotation, have it done at the interval specified. Tire rotation helps your tires to last longer.
What causes damage to tires?
Tire pressure can be decreased by poor-condition roads. Potholes in particular can temporarily knock loose the seal on the tire and cause some of the pressure to escape, which may not be immediately apparent. Be especially aware of this if you’re the type that traverses rough roads on a regular basis.
Age and normal use will also wear down your tires over time.
What kind of tires should I use?
Keep in mind the best tires for your situation. If you have performance tires from the summer, make sure to change them out for the winter. Be mindful of what your tires are made for and their respective strengths and weaknesses.
How can I keep up to date on tire recalls?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issues about twenty tire-recalls per year. Register your tire details online to receive email information about recalls. This will make sure you’re not driving on faulty technology.
